Connected spaces promise to revolutionize the way humans interact with their environments. The most desirable applications within these contexts might not be the most spectacular or even have an obvious market. Behind the techno-hype, there is a critical question: how will we design the relationship between people and these connected spaces?
In this one-day workshop, we will examine design principles for building connected, interactive spaces. Drawing on existing mental models and metaphors, we will imagine and prototype fictional interactions. We will explore mechanisms of feedback and control, and how they can be brought together to inform inclusive, open-ended and culturally relevant experiences. Using tools and methods developed at ART+COM Explore, participants will get the chance to work in interdisciplinary teams and help shape the future of connected spaces.

The workshop is intended for professionals and students in the fields of interaction and product design, making, architecture, storytelling, cognitive sciences, as well as anyone interested in critically examining connected spaces.

The workshop is hosted by ART+COM Explore and lead by Aurelia Friedland, Raphaël de Courville, Andreas Rau, and Iohanna Nicenboim.

Buchvorstellung: Boris Groys: In the Flow
In the early twentieth century, art and its institutions came under critique from a new democratic and egalitarian spirit. The notion of works of art as sacred objects was decried and subsequently they would be understood merely as things. This meant an attack on realism, as well as on the traditional preservative mission of the museum. Acclaimed art theorist Boris Groys argues this led to the development of “direct realism”: an art that would not produce objects, but practices (from performance art to relational aesthetics) that would not survive. But for more than a century now, every advance in this direction has been quickly followed by new means of preserving art’s distinction.

In this new work, Groys charts the paradoxes produced by this tension, and explores art in the age of the thingless medium, the Internet. Groys claims that if the techniques of mechanical reproduction gave us objects without aura, digital production generates aura without objects, transforming all its materials into vanishing markers of the transitory present.

Designing Against the Status Quo is a one-day workshop to be held on 5 June 2016 in conjunction with Designing Interactive Systems (DIS) 2016, 4-8 June 2016, Brisbane, Australia.

In this one-day workshop, we interrogate design strategies such as troubling, friction, queering, and contestation that aim to question the status quo (e.g., Light 2011, Korn and Voida 2015, DiSalvo 2011). In ways that are playful, heretical, theoretical, and applied we examine tactics that make space for alternative values to emerge in everyday life. As we design interactive systems that, on the one hand, seek to be accountable in responding to current and future societal challenges, and, on the other, are becoming ever more complex, we ask what trends in destabilizing and rethinking may help us innovate in both method and outcome.

We invite 2-4 page position papers from practitioners and researchers. Key topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Provisional elaborations: What does it mean to orient toward design from a perspective of troubling and/or creating friction? What are we turning toward in making such moves? From what are we turning away? Why (when, how) are these techniques needed or useful or generative – or not?
Bibliographies and theoretical provocations: Discussions of relevant readings and theoretical resources; theoretical provocations about design strategies for troubling, creating friction, provoking contest; accounts participants’ intellectual genealogies — how did you come upon strategies of troubling, friction, or contest in your work?
Examples and cases: Objects and artifacts that embody troubling or friction; methods and tactics for troubling or friction; empirical cases, attempts, and outcomes of troubling or friction at play; we are especially interested in examining how such orientations and tactics might be taken up in the work of creating everyday and mundane technologies in addition to more artistic projects.
Re-inventions and re-imaginings: Re-readings of already existing design papers and projects for what is not mentioned, asked, or oriented to.
Opportunities and open questions: Provocations for future work. What is apparent as missing in the elaboration, bibliography, and cases surfaced and shared at the workshop? Where is new work needed? What are some domains in which this approach could be generative? What are some elements of a research agenda moving forward?

Submission Details

Submissions may be prepared in a format of the authors choosing, and should be approximately 2-4 pages in length. If you would like a template to start from, feel free to use the ACM SIGCHI Extended Abstracts format (including the image-centric Pictorials variation). We also invite other submission formats that embody subversions – of which we cannot (of course) conceive in advance. Ideally all submissions should be in a form that allows sharing via this website in advance of the workshop itself.

Please email submissions to the organizers at status.quo.dis2016@gmail.com.

“Infrastructuring Collaboration” is a workshop organized within the 12th International Conference on the Design of Collaborative Systems. As it is in COOP’s tradition “workshops provide an opportunity to discuss and explore emerging areas of research on designing cooperative systems with a group of like-minded researchers and practitioners. Workshops may focus on any aspect of theory or practice, established concerns or new ideas in the field of the design of cooperative systems. The goal of a workshop is to share understandings and experiences, to foster research communities, to learn from each other and to envision future directions.”

Derived from the Latin cum (with) and laborare (to work), collaboration means the act of working alongside someone to achieve something. Framed in contemporary society such a definition emphasises the power of collaboration for achieving purposes that would be challenging for a person alone. However, the collaboration is far from being spontaneous and this is why it deserves the experts’ attention. How to support collaboration in design field was the theme of a full day workshop that we organised on the occasion of the 12th International Conference on the Design of Cooperative Systems. The purpose was to engage participants in a discussion about collaboration while developing a discourse on infrastructuring. Such a term emphasises the complexity of activities that occur over-time in socio-material-technical contexts [1]. By applying the Open Space Technology (OST) [2], the workshop grounded on the question: “What should we consider for infrastructuring collaboration in design/-ing?” The participants were invited to reflect on the conditions for collaborating today that is how to infrastructure [3] collaboration in different domains while experiencing an infrastructuring process.
