Edited by Mel Hogan and Andrea Zeffiro. For this special issue of Wi: Journal of Mobile Media, we are gathering contributions that address the idea of mobile trash.

The intention of this issue is to reconfigure the concepts of mobile and mobilities in relation to trash, by its various definitions and formations, from new materialism, feminism, media ecology, media archaeology, and queer frameworks.

We\'re especially interested in short pieces (2500 words) and creative interventions that explore mobile trash as pollution, fumes, compost, satellites, e-waste, toxins, bodies, drones, viruses, hacks, landfill, etc. We welcome pieces that poetically engage the politics of trash and speak to its borders, transitions, movements, materialities, shifts, contagions, ecologies, permutations, mutations, and invisible transferences.

The online issue goes live January 2016 and will be accompanied by a print-on-demand issue.

If interested, please send us a 300 word abstract to:
info@technotrash.org Include your name, personal URL, and title of submission.

PROJEKTIL 2014 freut sich auf Mark Prendergast (UK), The Rodina (CZ), Geoffrey Lillemon (US), I Like Birds (DE), Lucky Dragons’ Sumi Ink Club (US), Masanao Hirayama (JP), Tobias Zielony (DE), Peter Puklus (HU), Kai von Rabenau - Mono.

For the occasion of 14th International Architecture Exhibition la Biennale die Venezia.

Rather than conducting a historical account of modern epoch in Turkey, presenting an exhaustive catalogue, or trying to capture its unique local attributes, “Places of Memory” attempts to explore the main theme of the biennial via perceptions and experiences.Rather than conducting a historical account of modern epoch in Turkey, presenting an exhaustive catalogue, or trying to capture its unique local attributes, “Places of Memory” attempts to explore the main theme of the biennial via perceptions and experiences.

The project idea departs from three areas of Istanbul: The first comprises Taksim, where I was born and grew up. Taksim is also an important square, with a constantly changing appearance because of partial and inconsistent interventions. The Atatürk Cultural Center, situated on the narrower end of the square, is a symbol of modern architecture in Turkey. My father, Hayati Tabanlıoğlu, was the architect. This first area spreads out across a wider zone, and continues downhill from the square to the coast, passes along the warehouses designed by Sedad Hakkı Eldem, an important representative of 20th century architecture in Turkey, reaching Salıpazarı harbor. Like many other areas in Istanbul, this area, too, is undergoing transformation. The GalataPort project (a master plan proposal, 2001) developed by us (Tabanlıoğlu Architects) for the area, and the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, which we transformed from a warehouse into a museum (2004), were among projects that triggered change in this area. The second area is Bâb-ı Âli, where I spent my youth. Starting in Sirkeci, the area used to host the headquarters of important newspapers and printing houses in Turkey along two sides of the Cağaloğlu slope. I used to pass through this world every day since I studied in a high school in the same area. The final one is Büyükdere Boulevard and its environs. This area, once lined with fields and orchards, later with light industry buildings, today is in juxtaposition with the CBD, featuring high-rise buildings especially between Levent-Maslak axes that connect main transportation routes of the city.

A detailed discussion of these places that acted as thresholds during different stages of my life—or in a sense, my memory—seeded the first layers of the conceptual framework. Our focus in the exhibition is not necessarily on these places, but rather on the concept of place itself, incorporated with the subjective vision of every exhibitor in the team. The works interact with each other via different approaches based on different scales and mediums.

We chose not to write in advance the story that might emerge from this project. We will see the outcome together. This is a conscious decision that keeps us on edge, but one that also holds potentials.

At a time when human activity is threatening biodiversity and causing severe climate change, it becomes obvious that natural and artificial systems can no longer be conceived in isolation but only in relation to each other – or indeed as one. In order to develop the theme of Design Ecologies they invite a variety of disciplines to make contributions: full papers, exploratory papers, workshops, exhibitions and a doctoral consortium.

The Design Ecologies conference includes the following tracks:
Design and Approaches for Sustainability

Welcome are participants from all areas of research in PD, interested in exploring the role and position of ethnography and design anthropology in processes of participatory engagement and design. Especially they invite participants who are engaged in research through design, theoretical perspectives, and case studies relating to ethnography, design anthropology, and user research for 21st century challenges and/or digital technologies.

In the workshop we explore theoretical positionings and methodological approaches to ethnography and anthropology in PD. The following themes will be used to discuss relations between researchers and the Other, creating objects and contexts of design through design anthropologic approaches to societal challenges:
• Proximity versus Distance

In a three day workshop, experts and PhD students from different European countries and disciplines will come together for an intensive exchange about strategies and specific possibilities of societal transformation towards more sustainable lifestyles. Through a dialogue between observers and analysts of the transformation on the one hand, and designers of the transformation on the other hand, the workshop promotes an intensive relationship between theory and praxis. The PhD Workshop therefore addresses different disciplines e.g. social, economic and cultural scientists, architects, product-designers, engineers. Best practice projects (e.g. living labs in Barcelona) will be presented and examined from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Since 2009 the Sustainable Summer School combines the discourses of sustainability and design, which are both posing the crucial questions of ‚What is a good life?‘ and ‚What do we have to do in order to achieve it?‘. Every year the event has attracted students from different fields as well as graduates, young professionals and experts from all over the world to come and experience the true meaning of sustainability while enhancing their international commitment.
