Design discourses, practices and products that are constituted in the synergy of all our senses are the protagonists of design culture studies that takes design culture as a flow of cultural products produced by social practices and reflected in cultural discourses. Both design culture studies and somaesthetics are interested in body-mind interactions and both include theory, methodology and practice alike within their action radius.
The purpose of this conference is to take a step backward and address design theorists, philosophers, anthropologists, aestheticians, social scientists, healthcare professionals, technology experts, artists, designers and educators to discuss the parallel and complementary possibilities of these post disciplinary approaches in the spirit of initial dialogue and pragmatic goodwill in order to create platforms of fulfilling and fruitful future collaborations.

Artifact: Journal of Design Practice is an open access scholarly journal that publishes double-blind peer-reviewed design research broadly concerned with examining the nature of, developments in, and understandings of design practices. Design research is rapidly becoming a knowledge-intensive field characterized by an overwhelming scholarly interest in design’s many interfaces. These range from the role of design in solving complex societal problems to enhancing the sustainability and profitability of businesses across industries and geographies. Against this backdrop, the journal provides an outlet for researchers across disciplines and research approaches and encourages contributions from diverse perspectives that examine practices related to traditional and the emerging new activities of design, professions of design, and organizational uses of design. Moreover, the journal aims to reflect recent decades’ substantial transformation of the field of design research with contributions that touch on design practices from a broad spectrum of scientific fields such as semiotics, design semantics, critical discourse analysis, science and technology studies, design(erly) thinking, management, organization, and material history.

with any of the following themes (but not limited to):
* Theoretical and conceptual perspectives on the nature of current and

Aktuelle Ausschreibungen: Call for Papers: 3rd NERD Conference
3rd NERD – New Experimental Research in Design (Basel, 1 – 2 Nov 19)

The particular epistemic and innovative potentials of Design Research are increasingly recognized within the wider academic sphere and are in constantly growing demand by businesses, institutions and politics alike. Yet, design research also is a field and practice that, due to its in-between nature, lacks the clear boundaries and formal dogmatisms of more traditional research disciplines, as well as their implicit notions of secured knowledge and linear progress.
Recognizing this inherent openness as one of its key qualities, the New Experimental Research in Design (in short: NERD) conference aims at providing a genuinely diverse and open platform for discussing, reflecting on and exposing to a wider public the manifold ways in which design’s unique perspective and proficiencies can intelligently be applied as a research competence. It does so by inviting presentations of empirical research projects by researchers from around the world and from all areas of design research with a focus on methodologically and thematically original approaches.

3rd NERD, held at the Academy of Art and Design and hosted by the Institute Integrative Design in Basel Switzerland on November 1 & 2, 2019, once again will feature a careful selection of 30-minute presentations of research projects, each followed by another half an hour of time for questions and intense discussion with the audience. Developed and realized by BIRD, the Board of International Research in Design for the eponymous design research book series published by Birkhäuser, as an annual event with changing venues, this conference format has already proven its productivity twice.

Call for Papers
Deadline: Apr 22, 2019
Contributions should employ an original and well-conceived design-based and empirical/experimental approach and may deal with all kinds of interesting, engaging and socially, culturally and intellectually relevant questions. Contributions by NERDs from other fields who share a similar commitment to new experimental approaches in design research are also welcome.
