The KISDtalks have been developed in close collaboration between KISD lecturers and students. Featuring short exciting talks as well as vibrant and intensive discussions, the KISDtalks are very attractive, also for design-interested guests.
Themed “Design & Ethics“, the KISDtalks in the summer term 2014 will focus on different perspectives of ethics. Guests from business and industry, religion, philosophy, and from – of course – design are invited to share, present or discuss experiences, attitudes and contradictions.
What’s the meaning of ethics today in the context of professional work? Is there something like ethics – or what is negotiated when we refer to ethics? What conflicts of interest arise when trying to act ethically and what solutions are available? These questions are just a preview of the wide range of topics that might be discussed in this context.
First talk will be with Laura Popplow about: Design Relations?
As designers we are not only thinking and producing new artifacts, but we should also be concerned about the relations between all the living and non-living things that make up our world. With the more than necessary shift towards more sustainable ways of living and designing, we have to focus more and more on these relations, doing more good in the world with less – less energy, less waste, less materials. We have to shift from the notation of Design as nice to have to the question of necessity.
From designing “matters of fact“ we are (finally?) moving to the design of “matters of concern“ as Bruno Latour proposes. Ethical design in this sense is the design of meaningful relations – between people and other people, things, technology and other living entities. How could we design these relations?
Laura Popplow works as a researcher, artist and designer. She is teaching Interactive Media Design at the department of design and art of the Bergische Universität Wuppertal. Key aspects in her work are Locative Media, Participatory Design and Sustainability. She prefers to work transdisciplinary and collectively.
Her project FUNGUTOPIA is an experiment to work with fungi in design and architecture both as an utopian idea for future scenarios as well as a sustainable building material.
